I’ ve already wrote aboute two other versions of the Rolex Submariner Date collection in the previous passages. And today I want to review the Rolex Submariner Date White Gold 116619LB.
At the first glance of the white gold, I was deeply addicted by the sapphire blue dial and bezel. This beautiful and deep blue makes this watch distinguished from other models.
And then, this is also an excellent dive watch for many divers for its unique design makes it water-proof to a depth of 300 meters(1,000 feet).
The greatly honored watchmaker Rolex has a legendary and classic watch collection—the Rolex Submariner. As many fans of this watch know, it is James Bond the famous cenematic spy that originally make the Rolex Submariner a world famous watch. Although over half a century has passed, the legend of the Submariner has been ongoing. And the genius Rolex designers are recreating the Submariner in order to keep it brandnew and charming for always.
The Rolex Submariner Date 16610, one newest member of the Submariner collection, is the pursuit of many enthusiasts. This COSC certified chronometer with a diameter of 40mm is made mainly of stainless steel. The dial and bezel are both black. As to ensure safety, the bezel rotates only anti-clockwise, so there is no chance of over-estimating the surfacing time or the remaining amount of breathing mix in the tanks. The luminescent capsule ensures legibility, no matter how light-deprived the environment. . And this model is studded with sapphire.
As an excellent dive watch, the Submariner is water-resistant to a depth of 300 meters or 1,000 feet, this is a feature that would strongly attract the diving lovers. This watch is automatic winding, you need not to wind it to keep it working. And the bracelet exerts the fliplock makes it much more convenient to adjust the length of the strap, this is particularly useful when you need to put on the wetsuit.
Primarily created in 1953, the Rolex Submariner Oyster Perpetual Diving watch was the first diving watch guaranteed to be waterproof to a depth of 100 meters. As many fans of this most popular Rolex model know the fact that, the Submariner was made woroldwide known by a cinematic man—Bond, James Bond.
Ever since its origin, the Rolex Submariner has withstood many severe tests—not only in the lab, but also in the world which it’s born to live in:
In 1953, Demitri Rebikoff subjected a prototype to 132 dives up to depths of 60 meters over a five month period of time. The next year saw the Submariner embark on a 37-month journey around the world with four men. They wore the watch for over one thousand dives. Their conclusion of the Rolex Submariner – “perfect”. In 1965 the Submariner was worn by a team of scientists on a 15 month expedition to Antartica. During their journey the watch was exposed to extreme temperatures as low as fifty degrees below zero. Once again, the Rolex Submariner proved its worth.
Over the passed half century, the Rolex Submariner has undergone some changes. In 1954, the watch was guaranteed to be waterproof up to 200 meters. 1959 saw the addition of protective shoulders on the sides of the crown and the overall diameter was increased to 40 millimeters. In 1969 the first date models and the first gold models were introduced. Ten years later the plexiglas crystal was replaced with a more scratch resistant sapphire crystal and the waterproof guarantee was increased to 300 meters. Finally, in 2003, the commemorative 50 year anniversary model was introduced featuring a green bezel and a black dial.
Chapter 16 of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service when Bond prepares to use his Rolex as a knuckle duster:
“He softly retrieved his gloves from the bathroom, put on the goggles so that they rested in his hair above the forehead, tied the dark-red handkerchief tightly across his nose, schnapps into hip pocket and, finally, Gillette through the fingers of the left hand and the Rolex transferred to his right, the bracelet clasped in the palm of his hand and round the fingers so that the face of the watch lay across his middle knuckles.”
The Choice of 007′s Author
Although the cinematic James Bond has worn Rolex, Seiko, and Omega watches, to many the choice of which watch Bond wears can only come form his origins. Undoubtedly, the origins of James Bond lie with Ian Fleming and Bond’s earliest incarnation in the cinema.
Few people knows exactly why Ian Fleming chose a Rolex for the wrist of 007 James Bond. Perhaps Fleming was impressed by the fact that during World War II, British prisoners of war could write Rolex and receive a watch free of charge delivered directly to their prison camp. Perhaps it was for Rolex’s legendary toughness and dependability, or perhaps it was because Fleming wore a Rolex himself. Whatever the reason, Ian Fleming chose a Rolex for his most charming gentleman spy with a license to kill and as such should be considered the typical brand of James Bond watch.
When Bond was brought to the large screen however, the producers clearly had to pick their own model.
The James Bond Submariner
Many vintage Rolex collectors call all early Submariners without crown guards the James Bond Submariner, while others in the watch collecting field believe that the watch Connery wore in Dr. No and the others was the Rolex Submariner model 6538. Still other collectors believe that the Submariner Connery wore was more than likely one of four models or that perhaps each of the four models made an appearance in each of the early films, they are the 6200, 6538A, thick cased 6538 and the 5510.
All four models share the same thick case, a large crown marked Brevet (from the French word Brevette meaning patented), a coin edge non ratcheted bezel, an acrylic crystal, a depth rating of 200m/660ft and mercedes hands. It should be noted that only the “thick cased” shoulderless Submariners had the large winding crown. Further, it should also be noted that the 6538 existed first as a thin cased model with a small crown. It became a thick cased model as the 6538A and was available alongside the 6200.
Once the thin cased versions were gone, the 6538A became the 6538 remaining the same until it and the 6200 were replaced by the 5510. Since Sean Connery as James Bond only wore the thick cased Submariner (evident by the large crown), none of the thin cased, small crown so called James Bond Submariners without crown guards will be discussed.
A Vintage Rolex is one of the top quality wristwatches in society today. What is especially exciting about a Rolex watch is that they are not designed to be worn only on special occasions but rather they are designed to be worn constantly in a wide variety of situations. A used Rolex watch is considered to be one of the best wrist watches in the world. They work great and they are significant status symbols to many people. And, in reality there would be few that would argue with that basic premise. When you wear a Rolex, you’re a cut above the rest.
There is a wide range of prices for used Rolex watches which allows them to be purchased and worn by more people than ever before. The price does vary according to the model and the materials that are used and also by how rare the specific model is. Some older models are treasured more even then new Rolex watches. Beyond any doubt, Rolex watches are now truly synonymous with style, luxury, and success. Anyone wearing a used Rolex in either business situations or during a casual lifestyle is telling everyone around them that they are comfortable with who they are and they are truly to be respected.
These Vintage Rolex watches have a wide variety of styles enabling them to fit in any situation. The dials come in a variety of colors and in stainless steal, or silver, or gold and sometimes even with diamond accents. These watches are also available in styles that appeal to all different kinds of men and women with both metal watch bands and the leather strap styles so that once again it is possible to wear your Rolex in a wide variety of situations.
Another thing that is interesting about Vintage Rolex is that while there are a wide variety of unique designs they do also share many similar design characteristics between men’s and women’s watches so that the sharp eye can easily take out a true Rolex compared to an imitation or replica Rolex. There is obviously little doubt that a use Rolex watch is one of the great status symbols of our society. A new Rolex watch, while nice to own obviously, does sometimes implying that the wearer has just recently become successful while wearing a use Rolex watch implies that one has been successful for quite some time already. And isn’t that the message that you really want to broadcast to the world?
